Thank you for joining us on this BizVid Communications blog on finding dance video talent. BizVid Communications is a leading video production company located in San Diego California.
One of our national clients recently requested a music/dance video to be tied to their pharmaceutical product…and we thought we would give you some insights on how we pulled this together. In this particular blog will talk about searching out and finding good video talent.
On bigger jobs where a video requires a large variety of talent from which to select, we go beyond individual talent agencies and go to a casting agent. In this particular instance we used our friends at Samuel Warren Associates to locate talent all over San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.
It is very important to give your casting agent or person who is looking for talent specific instructions for searching out the best talent. Often, your quality of talent will have a lot to do with the quality of the descriptions you give to this individual. For this video, we were looking for a good cross section of ethnic groups and adults that could carry a beat, somewhat. But our selection for the video was not solely based on the quality of dance, but also the antics that each individual could provide.
Once we identified what the talent should look like, and the demographic they needed to fill, then the search began and we drew different talent from all over the area that met the specifications. We arranged a time and place where we could audition the talent, invited them in and videotaped them for the client to review later. Here is an example of our audition call sheet, with talent arrival times, staggered to maximize the review process.
Is important not to be too restrictive in your directions for the talent when they are presenting their skill sets. It is better for you to give them some flexibility to understand what their abilities are from which you can make a wiser decision.
Here we gave them general instructions for movement but did not give them really specific directions, so that we could see what they could do. As you will see, we have provided a variety of different options for the client to review and from which to decide. Once the client gave us their options, we ultimately came up with about half a dozen dancers that fit the bill for this humorous music video.
Of course when all these things come together, then it is time to actually produce the video. But, that’s a subject for our next blog.
