Welcome to another BizVid Communications video blog.  Today I’ll introduce you to an important element in video production and that is lighting.  The person hired to create the proper light within a production is the Lighting Director.  His job is to make sure that every scene is shot in the best light possible for the circumstance…whether the scene is indoors or out.

Recently we were called upon to produce a series of videos for Dr. James Dobson, an internationally known expert on family relationships.  During that shoot, I took the opportunity to speak with our lighting Director, Jim Tieper of Available Light, and asked him to give a brief overview of his responsibilities.

Jim Tieper:

The function of a lighting director on set is to make sure that the needs of the camera are met and that they can see what they need to see at the time they are supposed to see it.  Usually that involves running the lights through a dimmer so that someone can control the intensity of what’s on at what time each instrument comes on. Today, we are working in a venue that is new so we are the maiden voyage…we are breaking it in.  As with all things new there are good and bad elements that one has to deal with.  Right now, I’m pretty happy with the way things are coming together and I believe at the end, everyone else will be as well.

Our thanks to Jim Tieper for his excellent skill in lighting our project.  Dr. Dobson and his entire staff were very pleased with how the video looked and felt that our team delivered on our promise to do good work.  A video production has three key areas that need professional attention.  They are 1) audio, handled by an audio engineer, 2) video, handled by a director of photography and, 3) Lighting as you just saw.  When all of these elements are executed properly, the end result is a pleasing video that has the professional touch.
