Welcome to another BizVid Communications video tutorial. Today I’m going to show you how to add a caption to a picture using the Type Tool. Then I’ll show you how to move the text around so that you can place it in the picture where you want it to be. Then I’ll show you how to merge the text with the picture for exporting.
I am going to assume that you already know how to import a photo into Photoshop like I have done here. Next, I want to make the photo as big as I can get it within the workspace. For me, it’s easier to see things that way. So, I will use the shortcut and press and hold the control key while pressing the zero. As you can see, it brings the picture to the largest size possible within the workspace.
Next, I’ll select the “Type Tool” found here in the “Tool Palette.” Once selected, it opens all of the different things you can do with text. You can select font, size of font, and color. Next, I’ll choose the color that I want the font to be. That can be done one of two ways. First way is to click the top box here which will open the color pallet. Or, you can click this box which will also open the color pallet. But, take note, it’s the top box here that contains the color of the font….so make sure it is on top…controlled by these arrows.
Once the color pallet is open, scroll through the multitude of options and settle on your color of choice and click. Notice that the color you have selected is in the top box. Now, I can select the font and size I want or just begin typing and choose those later. I’ll begin typing.
This scene was taken in Ensenada, Baja. For me, the font needs to be bigger so I want to be sure to select the font that I want to resize by either clicking and dragging or by double clicking the “T” for “Type” in the “Layers” pallet. Next, I’ll click the drop down arrow which reveals the various size options. Or, I can click and drag “T” to increase or decrease incrementally.
Next, I’ll select the “Move” tool so that I can position the text where I want it. Now I’ll add a drop shadow. I position my mouse, scroll down to “Layer Style” then down to “Drop Shadow” and click. This brings up a dialogue box that lets you configure the extent of the drop shadow. Okay, that’s done and everything is where I want it so it’s time to save the photo as a jpg.
Currently, this project consists of layers….a text layer and the photo layer. To merge them, I position my mouse on “Layers” then scroll down to “Flatten Image.” When I click it, you will notice that the two layers become one. You are now ready to save this as a jpeg. Go to “File” then “Save As” then name your fixed photo and save. And that’s all there is.
